Strong and healthy oral tissues help keep your teeth clean, free from decay, and correctly positioned. Unfortunately, periodontal diseases are incredibly common. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly half of the adult population in America has gingivitis, mild periodontitis, or severe periodontitis.

In our previous blog, “A Guide to Gingivitis,” we discussed the basics of this mild but often painful gum condition, including the symptoms, causes, and dangers. In this blog, we’ll provide you with resources to help you battle the discomfort and risks of gingivitis when you can’t schedule a dentist appointment immediately. Use these six home remedies to soothe gingivitis symptoms.

1. Antibacterial Mouthwash

Gingivitis develops due to excess bacteria in the mouth that lingers around the teeth and on the gum tissues. This bacteria irritates the gums and other soft tissues in the mouth. If you experience large amounts of swelling and inflammation due to gingivitis, consider adding a once-daily antibacterial mouthwash to your oral hygiene routine.

Rinsing with mouthwash can help get the bacteria that your toothbrush bristles and floss can’t quite reach. For your best results, rinse after you brush your teeth at night so that the mouthwash stays on the surface of your teeth and gums for as long as possible before you eat again.

2. Antibacterial Toothpaste

If you experience some improvement with antibacterial mouthwash, but your symptoms do not go away completely, consider switching toothpastes. Antibacterial toothpastes specifically targets the bacteria that does the most damage to your gums.

Most antibacterial toothpastes continue to fight oral bacteria for six to twelve hours after you brush, giving the solution more time to work on your gingivitis. To give your new toothpaste the best chance at success, be sure to brush correctly, as we’ll discuss in section four.

3. Enhanced Nutrition

Gingivitis and other gum diseases are technically bacterial infections. These gum conditions may not cause feverishness or aches, but they can have an impact on your overall immune system. Additionally, people with compromised immune systems are more likely to develop gum disease and have gum conditions reoccur in the future.

To get rid of current gingivitis and prevent other infections, bolster your nutrition. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and other natural sources of vitamins as part of your daily diet. You may also want to take a vitamin C or zinc supplement while you’re dealing with gingivitis to help your body fight back.

4. Frequent Gentle Brushing

In almost all cases, gingivitis develops due to insufficient oral hygiene. However, the failing in your oral hygiene routine might be in the quality of your brushing rather than in the frequency. Brushing too roughly, softly, or inconsistently can all contribute to the development of gingivitis.

To improve your condition, brush gently but firmly at least twice a day. You should brush for at least two minutes or for as long as it takes to effectively clean the surfaces of all your teeth, your tongue, and your gums. You may also need to improve your flossing habits to fully control your gum condition and overall oral hygiene.

5. Herb Mouthwash

If you’re looking for a short-term treatment to reduce the amount of inflammation caused by your gingivitis, consider an herbal remedy. Some oral health experts report that certain herbs can calm inflammation and improve bad breath, namely sage and rosemary.

To create an herb mouthwash, boil two cups of water and add several ounces of your chosen herbs. Let this mixture brew overnight. In the morning, strain out the herbs. Then, add your homemade mouthwash to your routine.

6. Salt Rinse

Many patients experience persistent pain and discomfort with gingivitis. Anti-inflammatory over-the-counter medication can help, but if these painkillers fall short, consider using a salt rinse. Salt changes the pH of your mouth, killing unwanted bacteria and providing rapid relief for many individuals.

Stir ½ teaspoon of salt into an eight ounce glass of warm water. Rinse with the saltwater mixture for as long as you can. You can use this rinse multiple times a day for pain reduction, but you should avoid rinsing with salt more than three times a day since salt can dry out your mouth.

To target a problem area, place a small amount of salt on your finger and press the grains to the affected section of gums until the salt dissolves. Spit into a sink and then gently rinse your mouth out. Avoid swallowing any salt during these treatments.
